Question
|
Ken, in my job I support high schools in all their school improvement efforts. I know the topic of grading and reporting practices rocks a high school teacher's world. What might you suggest as a FIRST approach to even just opening up this topic to high school teachers and administration?

The Grade Doctor says:

At the high school level I think the best 'first approach' is to address the issue of
separating achievement from behavior. Faced with sample grade books or examples from
their own classrooms, I think most teachers can see how we have distorted achievement
by including behavior - and that this often leads to inaccurate communication about
student achievement in a standards-based system.

This seems like a logical, sensible place to start. And I know that this alone will cause really interesting, lively discussion since many high school teachers tend to use grades to represent lots of things besides pure academic achievement. Thanks for the idea, Ken.
