Question

Ken, there are a number of computer programs in the field claiming to be standards-based, but upon closer inspection don't measure up.

Do you have any recommendations for teachers looking to separate summative from formative assessment scores, do median averaging, and do conversions to the four-point scale?

There are no perfect computer grading programs but there are programs that can do some
or all of the things you mentioned, Hugh. I think the following are worth a look -
MarkBook, Webgrader, Pinnacle and PowerTeacher. I have done a small amount of
consulting with PowerTeacher (on a fee for service, not royalties basis) and when they
release version 2.0 in December it will probably be as good as it can get in computer
grading. A program that has been developed specifically for some Canadian provinces
called Markscan is also worth a look - it is 'bare bones' without a lot of bells and whistles
but it does most of what is necessary.
