Question
|
Having studied your book 15 Fixes for Broken grades, and having worked through parts of the professional development program, CLASSROOM ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING, our team of middle school teachers (grades 5-8) are interested in rethinking our report cards so that they more clearly communicate information about student achievement as well as about important behaviors. Can you recommend appropriate Middle School report card formats.

The Grade Doctor says:

There is little difference between the desirable features of report cards for middle schools
and other levels. Report cards should provide information about student achievement of
learning goals (e.g. in English - reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and
literature), preferably without single subject grades. Symbolic representation of student
achievement (performance standards) should involve levels (2-7) NOT percentages.
Valued behaviours should be reported separately from achievement of learning goals.
There should be sufficient space for teachers to provide meaningful comments about
student strengths and areas for improvement in each subject.
